Just west of Gothenburg lies the urban district of Torslanda, home to the renowned Swedish car brand Volvo for the past hundred years.

In 2022, our studio won a masterplan competition to redesign Volvo Car’s campus.  We can now reveal our design for a new office building with workshop labs for Volvo Cars.

Settled within the surrounding forest, the building looks out onto the neighboring terrain, characterized by cliffs, vegetation, creeks, and wetlands. Totaling 26,200 m2, the structure is broken down into smaller volumes for a more human scale and will have a timber structure and vertical wooden facades that reflect the nearby landscape.

In an area dominated by infrastructure and a mosaic of different buildings, Volvo Innovation House will take departure in Gothenburg's spectacular nature to create an attractive workplace.

"Our vision is to create the future workspace for Volvo Cars. A place that promotes innovation and collaboration and can attract and retain the best talents, Volvo Innovation House will make it desirable to come into work every day, it will also be a destination for everyone in Torslanda,"

Volvo Innovation House is designed with dynamic spaces intended to bring people together for social and active meetings, characterized by seamless connections with the nature outside. In addition to more traditional office areas, the buildings also house functions such as a meeting center, cafeteria, coffee shop, reception, exhibition area, and lab workshop.

Swedish nature as the main attraction

When arriving at Volvo Innovation House, employees and visitors are offered a transformative experience, guiding them from urban surroundings to a natural environment. The design integrates with the existing topography, offering spaces for relaxation, activity, and exploration.

“The ambition for the project is to keep as much of the nature untouched and let the unique, green surroundings, with its biodiversity, be the main attraction for the place, while creating modern office buildings that encourage people to interact with nature and each other,”

The new construction will be timber hybrid, and the first building is expected to be finished by 2026, in time for Volvo Cars’ one-hundred-year anniversary in 2027.

A big thank you to the tenant Volvo Cars, and our clients and collaborators Vectura Fastigheter, Next Step Group, and BRA Bygg.
